Pro skaters battle it out in skateboarding championships

NEW ZEALAND’S Nicole Begg, a two-time world champion, hogged the limelight in the Asianic Inline Cup Skateboarding championships in Putrajaya recently.
Begg completed the 42km marathon race in the women’s Open category in 1’28:06.314 followed by Indonesia’s Edi Marina Yo in 1’40:03.033 and Sylvia in 1’47:45.738 respectively.
In the men’s Open category, South Korea’s Tiger Kim Bum Sik crossed the finishing line in 1’29:34.706. Second and third were Indonesia’s Dimas Prasetya Putera (1’29:34.819) and Johanes Wihardja (1’40:02.947) respectively.
The championships was organised by Eco Sports Malaysia with support from the Putrajaya Tourism Action Council and Putrajaya Corporation (PPj).
PPj city services director Datuk Abdul Ghani Ahmad said the skateboard championships was held in conjunction with the Floria 2009 in Putrajaya.
“We had professional skaters with impressive track record,’’ said Abdul Ghani.
The organisers had also altered the traffic pattern for the championships and the skateboarders were required to cover a 7km distance taking them around the Putrajaya International Conven-tion Centre (PICC) and back to the starting point.
Besides the 42km distance, there was a 500m sprint competition and a 10km and 5km fun skate, and a 100m (sprint duel) competition pitting a skateboard racer and a cyclist racing to the finish line.

sigh...is it really that hard to tell the difference between inline skating and skateboarding? Wonder if tennis and badminton ever get the same mix-up.
