this is just a guess - - but the sideplates are yes... a little bit for looks (though i prefer the skates without them - they make it too bulky) but the plates also protect the boot - cus if u miss a grind - it'll rip the boot underneath (like trs alphas) if you dont have the plate. also - it acts as a sort of 'support' ..... securing the boot to the soul plates - so u 'feel' the grinds more.. though these are just speculations la - ill try em later today and see if its true

annnnnnnnd as it turns out..its not true. im skating them without the laceholders now. and i dunno - though they look plainer. they feel a little lighter and less bulky.
but no - the laceholders do nothing for 'support'
