Ice skating rink minus the ice
"erm.... wait...ice skates....with wheels.... thats like rollerblading innit?"
"I'd rather be rollerblading!"
Malaysians need not look for an ice rink to enjoy the frills and thrill of ice-skating, figure skating or ice hockey.
Smart Ice has come out with an innovative and revolutionary system - Smart Ice Arena- The rink without ice- that simulates the glide properties of wet ice without the need of generators and water. Its indoor and outdoor and size flexibility allows temporary or permanent installation in a wide variety of venues.
Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said launched the rink at the Bangsar Shopping Complex recently.

Azalina said she was surprised with the new system which could get more youngsters get involved in skating and eventually sports relating to ice.
“The government is always supportive to new technology being introduced to create interesting sporting activities. With the growing scarcity of playing fields, this concept should be promoted to encourage the younger generation to be active in sports.
“I was also told that the system was cheaper compared to building a ice rink. Of course, we can expect the skaters to venture into ice skating, figure skating or ice hockey after learning the basics in this rink,'' said Azalina.
The sports ministry, she added, would also look into ways to promote the installation of the rink all the states.

Malaysia is the first country in South East Asia to have the Smart Ice Arena. Smart Ice regional manager Filippo Gervasini said Malaysia was the ideal choice as it was a fast growing nation.
“Malaysian are also adventurous and this rink will provide them ample opportunities to venture and realise their dreams.
Gervasini ... ‘the Smart Ice Arena can be installed in 48 hours and is hasslefree in terms of maintenance’
“We have also come out with a unique 3S skate. The skates are an innovation - providing the same glide sensation and allowing all skating techniques in terms of turning and breaking. For the skater, they are easy to use and have the advantage of being beginner friendly.
“For the operators, the maintenance is hassle free. The rink can be installed in 48 hours. It can be installed in shopping malls, resorts and sports centre,'' explained Gervasini.
Two popular ice hockey clubs- Kuala Lumpur Cobras and Kuala Lumpur Wildcats - also played a friendly on the rink.
Alex Kam and Johnny Boulianne represented KL Cobras while Gary tan and Moi Jia Yung played for KL Wildcats.
Tan, who is considered as the most experienced ice hockey player in Malaysia, said the rink was quite demanding.
“It’s an exciting way to learn skating. After learning the basics, youngsters can venture into ice hockey. It’s a good way to promote skating in Malaysia,” said Tan.
The Smart Ice Arena will be at the Bangsar Shopping Complex until March 26. It is open to the public from 10am to 10pm daily.
